Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the episode in Pirojpur had proven the government is manipulating the judiciary.

He commented a day after a Pirojpur judge was released after a former ruling party MP and his wife had canceled bail petitions in corruption cases and obtained bail from another court by the MP and his wife within hours of denying bail prayers.

Speaking to reporters at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters before going to appear before a court in Dhaka, Fakhrul said, “We’ve been saying the government is exploiting the judiciary, that’s their evidence. The court was forced to accept bail prayers after the Pirojpur Awami League president was ordered to be sent to jail in the bribery cases of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The incident showed that the country lacks a rule of law. It showed once again the fact that the judiciary here is not independent,’ he said.

Judge Abdul Mannan of the district of Pirojpur and sessions passed an order on Tuesday to send former AL MP AKM Awal and his wife Laila Parvin to jail refusing their bail prayers in three ACC-filed cases in 2019.

As local AL leaders and activists and lawyers loyal to the party began demonstrations at court premises protesting against the decision, the government stand released judge Abdul Mannan and appointed joint district and sessions judge Nahid Nasrin a few hours later as Pirojpur’s acting district and sessions judge.

The acting district and sessions judge eventually issued their appeal petition to the couple bail for two months.

Asked for his comments on the criticism of AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader for raising questions about the upcoming Dhaka visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the centenary celebrations of the Mujib birth, Fakhrul said they did not want to add any significance to Obaidul’s co-worker.

He said there was no connection between centenary celebrations of the birth of Narendra Modi and Mujib.

We spoke about their National Register of Citizens about the communal tensions and attacks in Modi’s country. Bangladesh’s political parties and others were aggrieved about it and expressed their reactions on the subject,’ he said.

‘ At this time, against the backdrop, we were challenging the morality of his visit to Bangladesh, ‘ he said.

On Sunday, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said the Modi is likely to arrive in Dhaka on March 17 to attend the centenary celebrations of the Mujib’s birth.
