A Bangladeshi doctor— Misbahul Ferdous— stationed at Fuwai Hospital in China, says the hospital received immediate assistance from a cardiologist in Bangladesh during their time of need, while battling the coronavirus outbreak at its peak in the region.

Professor Mg Azam from the National Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases Dhaka (NICVD) sent 1000 pieces of surgical mask last month to doctors at Fuwai Hospital in China.

And now, as a way of saying thanks— and supporting Bangladesh at a critical period— Dr. Misbahul, along with three other organizations, is sending a consignment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to doctors in Bangladesh as the global coronavirus epidemic has also begun spreading here.

Dr Misbahul Ferdous, who currently works at Beijing’s Fuwai Hospital

“100 protective gloves, 100 protective eye glasses, 450 face pads, 4,000 surgical masks, 600 N94 (Korea) masks are being sent to Bangladesh. By March 29, they are scheduled to enter Dhaka.”

The initiative comes as a prompt response from three organizations in China to assist doctors operating on the frontlines of theCovid-19 crisis in Bangladesh.

Coordination efforts are led by Professor Yongjian Wu of Fuwai Hospital; Professor Junbo Ge, president of the Chinese Cardiology Association; and Professor Yong Huo, vice-president of the same association; and authorities of the Asian Cardiology Society.

They got in contact with a young team of physicians in Bangladesh, who will lead the distribution efforts here.

The aim is to target first large hospitals such as BIRDEM, DMCH and BSMMU and other authorities that are most at risk of pollution, such as airport health officials and law enforcers, Dr Misbahul added

They do intend to send a second shipment of PPEs to destinations in Bangladesh early and would like to distribute them in hospitals outside Dhaka as well.

Highlighting the need to ensure doctors ‘ safety, Misbahul Ferdous said Bangladesh’s health professionals can do better in their battle againstCovid-19 if their safety at work.
